Traditional Meat Lasagna


Ingredients:


  • For the red sauce:
    • 2 tsp olive oil
    • 1 lb lean ground beef
    • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
    • 1/4 tsp allspice
    • 1/4 tsp pepper
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 1 onion, chopped
    • 2 garlic cloves
    • 29 oz canned tomato sauce
    • 2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • For the white sauce:
    • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
    • 4 tbsp all purpose flour
    • 2 C reduced fat milk
    • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 9 oven ready lasagna noodles
  • 1/2C reduced fat shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350F
  2. To prepare the red sauce:
    1. Heat oil in a medium pot.
    2. Add beef and break up into small pieces.
    3. Add the spices, salt, and pepper, and brown beef.
    4. Add the onion and cook until translucent.
    5. Add garlic and cook for 2 minutes.
    6. Add the tomato sauce and Italian seasoning. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to medium low and let it simmer for 20 minutes.
  3. To prepare the white sauce:
    1. In a medium sauce pan, melt the butter and add the flour.
    2. Cook until the mixture starts to brown,
    3. Slowly add the milk while stirring constantly. Keep stirring until sauce thickens and coats the back of a wooden spoon, about 7 minutes. Remove from heat.
  4. Spread 3 tbsp of tomato sauce at the bottom of a 9x12 casserole dish 
  5. Top it with 3 lasagna noodles
  6. Add about 3/4 C of tomato sauce
  7. Top it with half of the white sauce
  8. Repeat steps 7-9
  9. Top with the rest of tomato sauce
  10. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese and put in the oven for 20 minutes or until the cheese starts to brown. Enjoy!
